This amphibian salamander was once an Aztec delicacy, and occurs naturally in Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. These little creatures have pigmentation genes, which when mutated change their colour variants. But most remarkable is the axolotl’s ability to regrow limbs, and even some more vital parts, including the central nervous systems, eye and heart tissues and part of its brain. The incredible regenerative characteristics of the little axolotl - which almost went extinct in the wild as a result of increasing pollution levels in Mexico City - are coupled with its ability to assimilate transplants. This has led to increased interest in the species from humans: the axolotl may well be the precious carrier of all kinds of transformative genetic knowledge, for humans and beyond...
